Wilderness Rite of Passage: Stepping into Young Womanhood

Summer 2025 - Young Women's Empowerment Program

Here you stand in the world, with the early days of childhood behind you, and the full blossom of womanhood not yet at your door…

Are you an old child? A young woman? How can you tell the difference? What does this threshold of maturity look and feel like for you?

What does your secret inner voice ask you to step into, to call forth?

What are your gifts, your callings, your unique contributions in this world?

Why Rite of Passage?

What does this look like?

Cultures all around the globe have historic evidence of holding ceremonial initiations to mark significant passages in life, such as passing from birth into childhood, into young adulthood, into full adulthood, into elderhood, and into death and beyond. These initiations are held and witnessed in a compassionate community. This form of ceremony helps to ground the sometimes intense and turbulent energies of these transition periods and to tune into the next phase of growth that is unfolding from one’s True Nature. It is like the bud attuning itself to the flower it longs to become.

We might ask, in the relative absence of such ceremonial passages in our current culture, how are our young folk initiating themselves through risky and addiction-building behaviors? Or how are they missing the opportunity for initiation altogether by remaining in a child-like mind and accepting the status quo without asking the deeper questions of what they really want, and who they are becoming?

We firmly believe that our culture needs adolescents who have been brought into the sacred cocoon of conscious transformation into young adulthood.

This cocoon isn’t always an easy space. It involves asking the hard questions about what we really care about, what/who we align with, and what our heart is called towards. It can be uncomfortable, as it means getting more in touch with our authentic emotions and letting them have space to be and to unfold. And it also is among the most meaningful experiences we can have in life: to let ourselves blossom into the next phase of life while being witnessed and held by a resonant, supportive community. This is how we are able to contribute our gifts to the world, and pursue our purpose.

For four days, we will journey out to the wilderness of Mt. Hood with a small council of adolescent girls and our team of wilderness guides and mentors. We will spend three nights and four days in this council, communing with nature, sharing deeply from the heart, and coming to know ourselves in a whole new way.

We will immerse ourselves in remote nature, camping and cooking and living together.

There will be challenges…there will be laughter…there will undoubtedly be Great Mystery. These young folk will come away from the long weekend nourished by authentic community and burning brightly with greater insight, self-trust, and passion for their unique ways of being in the world

Who:

Where:

We are calling in female-identified teenagers ages 13-15. If your adolescent is close to this age but falls outside the exact numbers, feel welcome to get in touch to see if it could still be a good fit.

This is an outdoor program taking place in the Mt. Hood wilderness. We will begin and end the program in Portland, Oregon.

When:

Thursday, July 25th - Sunday, July 29th

Cost:

The total cost for four days and three nights together is $700. This includes all meals together. Participants will be required to bring their own camping gear, though we can possibly accommodate with extra gear if needed. If the cost is prohibitive, please get in touch about a scholarship option. If there is a clear yes for your adolescent child, then we want to do our best to support that clear knowing.
